陈牧：寡人欲闻，用兵之道，先生教我。
萧凡：臣以为，用兵之道，不违时，不历民病，所以爱吾民也，不加丧，不因凶，所以爱其民也，冬夏不兴师，所以兼爱民也，故国虽大，好战必亡，天下虽平，忘战必危，天下既平，春蒐秋狝，振旅治兵，所以不忘战也。
陈牧：先生之言是也，寡人谨受教。

陈牧：寡人欲大化于天下，先生何以教我？
萧凡：臣以为，非礼乐不可，礼以检形，乐以治心，形顺于外，心和于内，然而天下不治者未之有也，是以礼乐修于上，而万国化于下，圣人之教不肃而成，其政不严而治，用此道也。
陈牧：先生之言是也，寡人谨受教。

萧凡：夫礼，先王以承天之道，以理人之情，失之者死，得之者生，故圣人以礼示之，天下家国可得而正也。
陈牧：先生之言是也，寡人受教矣。

萧凡：臣以为，凡人主必信，信而又信，谁人不亲，故《周书》日：允哉！允哉！以言非信则百事不满也，故信之为功大矣。
陈牧：先生之言是也，寡人谨受教。

萧凡：臣以为，人之为德，其犹虚器欤！器虚则物注，满则止焉，故君子常虚其心志，恭其容貌，不以逸群之才加乎众人之上，视彼犹贤，自视犹不肖也，故人愿告之而不厌，诲之而不倦也。
陈牧：先生之言甚善，寡人受教矣。

陈牧：寡人欲佯怒以试群臣，若能不畏雷霆，直言进谏者，则是正人，顺情阿旨者，则是佞人，先生以为如何？
萧凡：臣以为，流水清浊，在其源也，君者政源，人庶犹水，君自为诈，欲臣下行直，是犹源浊而望水清也，理不可得也，大王常以司马懿多诡诈，深鄙其为人，如此，岂可堪为教令哉？
陈牧：先生之言是也，寡人欲使大信行于天下，不欲以诈道训俗，吾知过矣。
